According to the United Nations of Food and Agriculture (FAO), the COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the urgency to expand universal access to water. The right to water is still a problematic issue in Latin America, despite being a rich region in hydric resources, thousands of people do not have access to this type of resource. Nowadays, the region’s main challenge is to resolve conflicts related to the use of fresh water and make progress in the integrated management of this resource. In the FAO evaluation, the creation of mechanisms to deal with this scenario of scarcity in Latin America is urgent.
Impacts on Defense and Security: Access to water is key to disease prevention and to ensure economic and sustainable development. Water scarcity in Latin America may affect agricultural and livestock production in the next coming years. Such a framework may compromise security safeguard, mostly in its food, health and economic dimensions.
